Text, Texture and Textiles

Artists answered Beaver Dam Area Arts Association’s call for submissions for its Text, Textures and Textiles show. BDAAA welcomed two or three dimensional works that fit the exhibit theme.

BDAAA executive director Jessalyn Braun said the exhibit will include costumes created by Lois Levenhagen for Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre and a suit she designed and created for UW Varsity band director Mike Leckron, worn during the band’s spring concerts. Levenhagen began creating Leckron’s spring concert suits in 1992. Braun said the costumes may include the coat Levenhagen created for BDACT’s 1995 production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” designed and created by Levenhagen.

Text, texture or textiles are the major features of the art submitted to the show. Penny Ross upscaled bedsheets into a mandala. Braun said the show features work by Michael Lemke, who makes jewelry for the BDAAA gift shop.

“He’s a local favorite,” Braun said.

Other artists include Ruth Rex, Elizabeth Braun, Karla Spinks, Sue Hoehnen, Nancy Mather and Florida artist Anne Walker who will be hosting a painting workshop, later this summer.

Braun said most of BDAAA’s exhibits are geared toward the more traditional styles of art — drawing and painting.

“This is meant to showcase the work of multi-media artists, sculptors, fabric artists and graphic designers,” Braun said. “I think this is a fun exhibit.”

Braun said the Sewing Weekend hosted by Nancy’s Notions runs during the Text, Textures and Textiles exhibit, and she thinks the quilting and fabric arts on display will appeal to Sewing Weekend guests.
